Autumn Basket Workshop
November 13 - 15
$ 150 - $ 200
As the leaves drop and the light wanes, you're invited to join Annie and 5 other local learners for a weekend intensive in traditional stake and strand willow basketry. Over the course of the weekend, you will learn everything you need to know to be able to to build a basket from field to finish using regenerative harvest practices and northern European weaving techniques that date back several millennia. You will complete the class with a beloved finished basket to take home and enjoy, along with the skills necessary to continue learning and weaving on your own.
*For pandemic safety reasons, this class is available for folks local to Viroqua only.*
Friday afternoon will kick off the weekend with an optional group harvest venture in which participants learn to identify and cut wild willows and gather the materials they will need for their basket. (If you would like to skip the harvest, Annie will provide materials for a $50 fee.) Saturday and Sunday, we will weave from 9 AM - 5 PM, or until all have finished their baskets on Sunday.
Throughout the workshop, we will practice social distancing, wear masks if indoors, and bring our own meals, snacks, drinks, cups, and tools to use. The workshop location is pending, but it is likely we will be indoors with windows cracked for ventilation and plenty of space between work stations.
Places can be secured with a $75 check deposit, which is refundable in cases of illness or inclement weather. These are tricky times to make plans for many of us, so let's all plan to be flexible as things unfold. If you or someone in your family has cold or flu symptoms during the week of the class, or you've been exposed to someone who has been diagnosed with covid-19, I am happy to refund your deposit and will offer your spot to someone on the waitlist. Feel free to propose trades or partial trades, and don't hesitate to reach out if you can't swing tuition.
