The Lounge at Youth Initiative High School 

Viroqua, WI

       These six brave souls embarked on a 4-week journey of intensive songleading training at Youth Initiative High School. The final task of the class was to lead an all-community sing, in which each student taught a song to a group of 30+ people, who then gave them immediate feedback on their leadership. It was a heartfelt, inspiring evening to remember. Thanks to all who came to show your support for these students!

 

Autumn Sing!

       A cozy evening of singing in the season of dark in the beautiful ridgetop studio of Amy Arnold and Kelsey Sauber Olds. Over the course of the evening, community songleader Annie Zylstra will lead a variety of songs to welcome and celebrate the inner and outer Autumn. Accessible yet musically delicious rounds, harmony songs, and Balkan songs of harvest, falling leaves, and embracing the dark. All voices are welcome for this opportunity to connect with community and celebrate the happenings of Life around us. Arrive at 6:30 for settling in, introductions, and warm-ups. Tea and treats provided.

Mennonite Women's Retreat

          Annie was the guest teacher at this year's annual Madison Mennonite Women's Retreat at Pine Lake Retreat Center. The Madison Mennonite Church is a queer-friendly congregational church in Madison, WI that holds community, non-violence, and seeking ways to promote peace and justice at the core of its ministry. Gates of Heaven Sing!

  Join Resound Choir and community choir leader Annie Zylstra for a very special end of term singing celebration at the 4th oldest remaining synagogue in the U.S. -- The Gates of Heaven -- which is right here in Madison! All are welcome to sing and listen along with a review of our favorite repertoire from the fall term. Come and Resound in this resonant and beautiful space!

National Prison Doula Training

          Annie is thrilled to be a guest speaker at this year's National Prison Doula Training in Minneapolis. She will be presenting about her work with women and voice, and give a workshop on the power of song in the context of birth work and as postpartum care. The Prison Doula Project is an amazing organization that provides pregnancy and parenting support for incarcerated women. We provide birth support from trained doulas, as well as group-based and individual education and support to pregnant women and mothers. The goal is to nurture healthy mother-child relationships and increase parenting confidence and skills. To learn more about the Prison Doula Project, visit http://www.mnprisondoulaproject.org/.

Queer Farmer Convergence

September 29 - October 1

Decorah, IA

          A land-based gathering and camp out to center queerness in alternative agriculture, to build a community of support that interrogates and interrupts colonial, racist, sexist, and heteropatriarchal legacies in U.S. agriculture, to ask and propose ways that queer farmers can regenerate landscapes and revolutionize agriculture, to make music, create art, and eat delicious food together. A collaborator in the making of this event, Annie will be stirring songs of empowerment and justice, among other things into the mix.

    Singing Rabbit is a 4-day singing event hosted by Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage in Northeast Missouri that celebrates our voices, friendships, and community. Together, we will eat, sing, play, and swim in the wondrous community pond for the whole of Labor Day weekend in the steamy late summer Missouri air. Come and sing with community songleaders Laurence Cole, Liz Rog, Annie Zylstra, and more! The gathering has limited space, so register soon!

    Join friends, neighbors, and community in Madison, WI for an evening of harmony singing in the aural tradition to welcome a harvest season of singing! The Big Sing, put on by Resound and Morning Glory Choirs of Madison, is an experiment designed to gather a wide variety of voices and see out what happens when a big group of folks who have never sung together before gathers to make freshly learned sounds and new connections. It is a great opportunity for those who have yet to experience singing together in this way to drop in and get a taste of what it's all about! We will sing rounds, harmony songs, and songs from other cultures, all taught on the spot. All ages and genders are welcome to come and join the fun! No experience necessary. $10 suggested donation for non-choir members.

You’re invited to come and experience the age-old magic of oral tradition singing with natural voice songweaver Annie Zylstra. Together, we'll lean into questions of voice, place, and community through singing harmony songs, rounds, and songs in other languages, all taught on the spot. No prior musical experience is necessary. All ages, genders, orientations, and abilities are welcome! 

Singing Alive Appalachia

May 31 - June 3

    Singing Alive Appalachia is an annual oral tradition singing gathering tucked into the ancient song-rich hollers of the Appalachian mountains. Folks from surrounding bioregions gather to invigorate and be invigorated by song and reweave the cultural threads of communal singing in this place. These songs are both local and multicultural, coming to us from many eras and lands far and near. Together they tell a perennial story of spiritual evolution, of earth-conscious living and peaceful co-existence. Find Annie at this year's gathering, leading songs from the Heartland, cross pollinating seeds of songs alongside a variety of Appalachia-based song leaders and carriers.

2013 - 2018

    A multi-generational gathering of oral tradition singing nestled into the ancient bluffs and river valleys of Driftless Iowa. Come to sing, dance, play, remember, and warm your bones in the fire of community. Sing with Annie and a large list of skilled and beloved oral tradition song leaders from around the country, including Laurence Cole, Aimee Ringle, Lisa Littlebird, and Melanie Demore.
